Sacred soil carried through the City of London

SACRED soil from the battlefields of Flanders was carried through the streets of the City of London this morning on a gun carriage.

The bags of soil arrived in London yesterday on board the Belgian frigate Louise Marie and was loaded on to a gun carriage of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery this morning.

The procession started near HMS Belfast this morning and was accompanied by members of the Household Division including eight mounted outriders from the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, officers from Head Quarters The Household Division, and mounted outriders of the Metropolitan Police.

The procession crossed Tower Bridge, turned left at Tower Hill and then went up Eastcheap, along Cannon Street, past St Paul’s and into Fleet Street. The soil was taken to Wellington Barracks where it will form part of a World War One memorial garden.
