LORD of the Rings legend Sir Ian McKellen was the recipient of the Freedom of the City of London yesterday.
The honour was handed to the actor in recognition of his work on behalf of gay rights.
McKellen, who was a co-founder of the charity Stonewall, was received the award from City of London mayor Fiona Woolf at a ceremony at the Guildhall.
As well as being an acclaimed actor and campaigner, McKellen also owns the Grapes pub in Narrow Street, Limehouse.
